چکیده

For engineers, it is interesting to gain insight in the effect of control strategies on microbial communities, on their turn influencing the process behavior and its stability. This contribution assesses the influence of process dynamics on the microbial community in a biofilm reactor for nitrogen removal, which was controlled according to several strategies aiming at nitrite accumulation. The process dataset, combining conventional chemical and physical data with molecular information, was analyzed through a correlation analysis and in a simulation study. During nitrate formation, an increased nitrogen loading rate (NLR) resulted in a drop of the bulk liquid oxygen concentration without resulting in nitrite accumulation. A biofilm model was able to reproduce the bulk liquid nitrogen concentrations in two periods before and after this increased NLR. As the microbial parameters calibrated for the ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) in both periods were different, it was concluded that the increased NLR governed an AOB and NOB population shift. Based on the molecular data, it was assumed that each period was typified by one dominant AOB and probably several subdominant NOB populations. The control strategies for nitrite accumulation influenced the bulk liquid composition by controlling the competition between AOB and NOB. Biotechnol. Nitrifying and heterotrophic population dynamics in biofilm reactors: effects of hydraulic retention time and the presence of organic carbon.

Two biofilm reactors operated with hydraulic retention times of 0.8 and 5.0 h were used to study the links between population dynamics and reactor operation performance during a shift in process operation from pure nitrification to combined nitrification and organic carbon removal. The ammonium and the organic carbon loads were identical for both reactors. The composition and dynamics of the mi...

Modelling ammonium-oxidizing population shifts in a biofilm reactor.

The dynamic reactor behaviour of a nitrifying inverse turbulent bed reactor, operated at varying loading rate, was described with a one-dimensional two-step nitrification biofilm model. In contrast with conventional biofilm models, this model includes the competition between two genetically different populations of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), besides nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). Prev...

Modelling microbial competition in nitrifying biofilm reactors.

A large variety of microbial parameter values for nitrifying microorganisms has been reported in literature and was revised in this study. Part of the variety was attributed to the variety of analysis methods applied; it also reflects the large biodiversity in nitrifying systems. This diversity is mostly neglected in conventional nitrifying biofilm models. In this contribution, a one-dimensiona...

The role of inoculum and reactor configuration for microbial community composition and dynamics in mainstream partial nitritation anammox reactors

Implementation of partial nitritation anammox (PNA) in the mainstream (municipal wastewater treatment) is still under investigation. Microbial community structure and reactor type can influence the performance of PNA reactor; yet, little is known about the role of the community composition of the inoculum and the reactor configuration under mainstream conditions. Therefore, this study investiga...

Homogeneity and Synchronous Dynamics of Microbial Communities in Particulate Biofilms: from Major Populations to Minor Groups

Natural or engineered microbial populations often show variations over time. These variations may be due to environmental fluctuations or intrinsic factors. Thus, studying the dynamics of microbial diversity for different communities living in a spatially homogeneous landscape is of interest. As a model ecosystem, nitrifying biofilm communities were grown in a two litre inverse turbulent bed re...
